Differences between Traditional Learning and Innovative Learning

INTRODUCTION

Learning which is currently implemented by teachers in schools still largely traditional in nature. That is where the teacher is the most dominant role while the students are simply acting as a good listener. Include in the learning of mathematics. Less activeness of students is also a weakness of the traditional nature of learning mathematics. In addition, the method of learning mathematics that is still traditional in nature also led the teachers encountered some difficulties, among others, teachers have difficulty in facilitating the students in learning mathematics, teachers had difficulty in encouraging students to be more achievement, teachers have difficulty in using props that can be used in learning mathematics, and teachers have difficulty in encouraging students to learn to cooperate with other friends or work in teams.

Learning mathematics which is currently is learning that is still traditional, but other have used the learning that is innovative. Any mathematics learning system has its advantages and disadvantages of each and also has the characteristics of each.
Traditional learning is learning where the general learning center on the teacher. So the teachers have a role as a teacher and an educator and also the students as the object of learning. Traditional learning system is characterized by the meet between students and teachers to make teaching learning process. Traditional learning system has been held since the first until currently for the primary purpose teaching learning. Traditional learning system face obstacles related to limitations of space, location, and time of administration with the increasing activities of students and teachers. The traditional learning characterized by:
a.       Teacher is only and only source of learning
b.      Using the philosophy of behaviorism
c.       Learning is an investment and provision for later life
d.      Students as an empty vessel
e.       Students are passive learners
f.       The paradigm and theories of teaching method is “transfer of knowledge by the teacher”
g.      That stands out is the control function and teaching function
h.      Teacher as a implementer
i.        Mathematics as an outsider object
j.        Using a learning based on the KTSP and syllabi set based on curriculum
k.      The students have no role in the classroom
l.        The students are as the objects
m.    The students is depend on the teacher
Innovative learning system is using two-way communication that allows the students to discuss with the teachers. Opportunity for discussion is quite large because the ratio of the teacher and the student have enough and the teachers always trying to create an atmosphere conducive to discussion. To improve the understanding of the material most teachers provide tasks to work independently and groups accompanied by the application of technologies such as searching for information on electronic media, print, and internet. To be able to implement innovative learning, teachers should master the competencies or the other learning components are the subject matter, learning media, and learning evaluation. However, for purpose of teaching is theoretical, the other competencies can be studied simultaneously. The innovative learning characterized by:
a.       Students can be a source of learning with the student’s ability
b.      Using the philosophy of constructivism
c.       Learning is an activity which involves teachers and especially students
d.      Students are the seed which is always growing and developing
e.       Students are active learners
f.       The paradigm and theories of teaching method is “construct of knowledge by the students”
g.      The stands out is the facilitate function and learning function
h.      Teacher as a developer and facilitator
i.        Mathematics is the student himself
j.        Using a learning based on the KTSP and syllabi set based on curriculum
k.      Teachers provide activities and examples as teaching practice
l.        The students are the subjects
m.    The students is independent on the teacher
According to Marsigit in “Inovasi Pembelajaran untuk Meningkatkan Gairah Siswa dalam Belajar”, to increase student’s enthusiasm in learning, teachers need to provide innovation in learning so that students are not bored, that is changing the learning system which was originally a traditional learning system into a progressive learning system, among others:
a.       Teacher centered - student centered
b.      Authoritarian - democratic
c.       Students passive - students active
d.      Orientation results - orientation process and results
e.       Expositions - discussion, the variation method
f.       Abstract memory - concrete, understanding, application
g.      External motivation - internal motivation
h.      Very formal - less informal
i.        Centralistic - autonomy
j.        Highly structured - flexible
k.      Teacher - educators, facilitators, dynamist
l.        Teachers implementing the curriculum - teachers developing the curriculum
m.    The role of the teacher dominating - the role of the teacher serve
According to Marsigit in “A Critical Look at International Level of Mathematics Education”, to develop the teaching of mathematics is need some efforts, such as:
1.      Ask for professional experiences from experiences colleagues
2.      Change activities often
3.      Assign group roles for the first few team projects
4.      Work to foster a team environment
5.      Enforce individual accountability for group projects
6.      Require participation in some form each class period
7.      Find the right mix of guidance, structure, and visibility for all groups
8.      Encourage discussion between the groups
9.      Recognize excellent performers individually
10.  Give individual work in addition to group work

CONCLUSION

The existence of a paradigm from traditional learning into innovative learning will lead to a change in terms of learning. Therefore, to realize the quality of learning, there must be good cooperation between teachers, students, and other parties. Students are initially in a traditional learning system is only a passive role in learning, but in an innovative learning system the students will become more active in learning.
